Housing Accommodation Request for Disability Related Needs

Terms and Conditions

Disability Services works with the campus housing office to assist students in acquiring physically accessible housing and housing accommodations based on medical need.

Housing accommodation requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis according to need with documentation of disability and strong medical support. Following a thorough review of the documentation, recommendations will be made to the Housing Department as appropriate to the Housing Department.

* All medical requirements or needs will be considered before roommate selection and neighborhood preference.

Housing requests for returning students who wish to be considered for a housing accommodation must be submitted to the Disability Services Coordinator in the Academic Advising Center by:

Friday March 7, 2008

Single Room Requests

Single room requests will be considered when accompanied by appropriate medical documentation indicating that such an assignment will assist the student in the personal management of his/her disability. Following a thorough review, recommendations will be made as appropriate to the Housing Department.

In general, the following diagnoses may lend themselves to single room housing accommodations:

  • Disorders Involving Muscular Degeneration
  • Immunodeficiency Disorders (or need for chronic medication which significantly impacts immune function)
  • Sleep Disorder (generally a full sleep assessment including sleep disorder lab student will be required)

In general, the following diagnoses do not lend themselves to single room housing accommodations:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Bi-polar Disorder
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Depression and/or Anxiety
  • Eating Disorders
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  •  Migraine Headaches

**Single room requests for the sole purpose of obtaining a reduced distraction study environment WILL NOT be approved. Even without a roommate, a communal living environment can be very distracting. Students are encouraged find a place outside the residence hall to study, such as the library, which is designed for these types of activities.

Documentation Supporting Housing Accommodation Requests

A qualified medical professional must provide a letter (on professional letterhead and with original signature) that includes a clear statement of the medical diagnosis, the basis for diagnosis, a description of treatment plan, patient response, and prognosis, as well as the current impact of the disability as it relates to the housing request that is being supported. The credentials of the diagnosing professional must be listed if not clear from the professional letterhead or other forms. The diagnosing professional may not be a family member.

In all cases, the University expects students to adhere to the treatment recommendations of the professionals helping them manage their care. To this end, housing accommodation requests are not automatically transferable from one academic year to the next and updated medical documentation stating student progress may be required at the time of renewal requests.

**INITIATING THIS PROCESS DOES NOT GUARANTEE THE ACCOMMODATIONS WILL BE APPROVED**

You must submit a personal statement supporting your request. You will want to include:

  • A fuller description of your housing need
  • Benefits if your request is granted and/or the consequences if it can not be met
  • Possible alternative to your first choice

A particular roommate is not considered an accommodation for a disability.

Supporting documentation must accompany your personal statement in order to fully evaluate your request.
